The Collar

The “Collar” project is a wearable object that mechanically opens to reclaim individual space by means of personal expression. It enables the wearer to turn a public area into a private space, simply by opening the collar to accommodate privacy in public. The collar is intimately connected with the notions of the self, as well as the cultural construction of modesty, privacy and space. What interests me is how the notions of identity can come into being through encountering others rather than excluding the possibilities of such encounters, although the collar could be seen as an excluding device it may also proposes the possibilities for the creation of situations and may be seen as a strategy to help manage the (un)usual needs and desires of an individual or as an urban coping mechanism to explore the social and spatial relationship we have with public life.
