home grown meat
Thursday, February 14, 2008 at 10:12AM As an interaction designer my field is very broad, when designing interactions it can change depending on whom I am collaborating with. With one of my projects “ Meat of the Future”, I worked with scientists from the Imperial College in London on a brief called “Vitro-Cultured Meat Production”. Scientists are developing methods of growing meat in labs using animal cells. This area of research, called In Vitro-Cultured Meat Production. It raises all sorts of complex issues about the meaning of food, our relationship to animals (and nature), human values and behaviors, and even taboos. The purpose of the project was to explore how design can be used as a medium to draw attention to the social, cultural and ethical implications of ‘cultured meat’. In response to discussions with the scientists I created a short video piece that explores the potential relationship and interactions we may have with engineering meat in the domestic environment. It follows the process of receiving a few cells of mail ordered “vitro meat” to being grown, cultivated and harvested ready for eating and sharing with friends.
